Light up dance floors, giant disco balls hung from the ceiling catching and reflecting multi-coloured light. Music pumping, everyone on the dance floor gettin’ down to boogie. This was the scene of Studio 54 in the 1970s. The most exclusive and popular disco nightclub of the era. Its chic interior design and prominent guest list secured its spot as the most highly celebrated disco nightclub throughout history.
In 1977 the club was established by Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager who took over the building after it was converted from an Opera house to a radio and television station. After Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager repurposed the building into a nightclub, they retained many of the theatrical sets from the previous television studios that occupied the building and utilised them in the styling of the club, making it a unique and one-of-a-kind venue that gave a high-end aesthetic and encouraged an exclusive guest list.
